Barnardo’s Real Love Rocks Healthy Relationships and CSE Prevention Service launches new LGBTQ resources on the most romantic day of the year!

Happy Valentines! The free resources aimed at primary and secondary schools fit alongside the existing Real Love Rocks resources around Healthy Relationships and Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness.

Project Worker Paula Bowman says: “We are really excited to be launching our new FREE resources that will help teachers and professionals to be more inclusive of LGBTQ identities within lessons.

“Often same sex relationships and transgender people are completely invisible in SRE and Healthy Relationships resources. The failure to discuss different families, gender identity and sexual orientation can have a negative impact on children and young people, increasing the feelings of isolation, lack of acceptance and bullying.

“We know that these issues may encourage young people to seek support via adult spaces and put them at risk of CSE. Teachers often feel confused about what they can and can’t teach and tell us that they are often dealing with homophobic bullying and really need support in tackling these issues in an age appropriate way”.

Teachers call for support in creating LGBT content for SRE.

Teachers have called for support in creating LGBT inclusive curriculum content for sexual relationship education (SRE). They feel they don’t know if they are allowed to teach about lesbian, gay and bisexual issues. They would also not be confident if a child raised a question on sexual orientation or LGBT in the classroom.

New animations and activities have been developed in response to help to address these gaps in Primary and Secondary Schools and are available for free download: http://www.barnardosrealloverocks.org.uk/dashboard/
