What is Inter Faith Week?

Inter Faith Week is an occasion, celebrated every year to showcase religious diversity and bring together communities of different faiths and religious beliefs. Events and activities are planned throughout this week to draw attention to the invaluable work done by community-based faith groups and organisations, encouraging greater interaction between different faith communities through learning, sharing values between different faiths and bridging new partnerships and possibilities to promote an understanding between people with religious and non-religious beliefs.

We know faith worship places are where some people may turn to their faith in times of personal struggle, hardship, bereavement and when they feel most vulnerable. Faith groups play a major role in the lives of adults, children, and young people where nurture, respect and caring are central values in all faiths.

Faith organisations and their leaders have significant reach within their community, to influence change and support those in need. We are lucky in this country we have several religions in the UK that offer care and support for those in need and their doors are always open to support people regardless of their religious beliefs. Faith means many concepts to each one of us, for me, it’s the sense of belonging, peacefulness, and spirituality this brings me. In this week’s NWG team catch-up I asked colleagues, what faith means to them, to some I did put them on the spot, but I believe it got us all thinking about what the word faith means to each of us as a team, some of the words included:

Not everyone in the team is religious, but they all shared what the word faith means to them and brought a sense of conversation through each word they shared.

For those of you reading this, maybe something for you to consider amongst your teams in workplaces or personal lives; What does faith mean to you? as this simple question can bring up discussion regardless of if faith is a big or small part of your life.

The NWG network is committed to ensuring we raise awareness, knowledge and capacity amongst faith leaders and designated safeguarding leads to prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation, within all faith communities.

Across the year, I have heard from various faith-based organisations up and down the country about the fantastic work they do in their communities, they will join me on future podcasts, so keep an eye on these. But there is always more we can do to build those communications better to support our children, our young people, and our communities.

We all have the same goal, so let’s think of where to join up more closely. So, if you are from a faith community or from statutory services, how closely do you work together in your areas? If you don’t, how can we change this to protect our future generations better?

I hope whatever you do in your organisations across the interfaith week, it brings you closer together and provides an opportunity for you to learn something different about faiths.
