| Giving devices this Christmas – an online safety guide Is that the sound of sleigh bells ringing? The holiday season is upon us! We’re sure that many young people have devices on their Christmas list, whether that’s a tablet, phone, games console – the list goes on! Getting a device can be an exciting time for young people, and there may be considerations for parents and carers to make as they consider buying it. These top tips will help you prepare for giving your child a device as a present and establishing ongoing conversation and guidance with your child about their relationship with it. Under 2 months until Safer Internet Day Safer Internet Day 2023 is on 7th February 2023, and will be celebrated with the theme “Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online”. Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day sees thousands of organisations get involved to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. Now, with only two months to go until the big day, we’ve highlighted everything you can do to get involved: You can join our nearly 500 supporters in pledging your support for Safer Internet Day 2023 and help us to reach more young people than ever before. The education resources are there to help teachers and professionals to deliver engaging and interactive Safer Internet Day sessions. An information session will take place on January 11th 2023 with everything teachers and educators need to know about getting involved in Safer Internet Day 2023. Excitingly, this year, we have created a video wall on our website where any young person aged 7-18 can upload a short film they have created about their online experiences. What are social media algorithms? Social media algorithms are one of the tools used by technology companies on the apps, games and websites we use every day. In this post, we will help answer the questions that parents and carers may have about algorithms and some information about how to help keep your child safe when spending time online. |

We welcome the Government’s additions of the criminalisation of “deepfakes” and “downblousing”, which are invasive, non-consensual, and damaging. In its continued handling of the Bill, we encourage parliament to prioritize the safeguarding and protection of children and young people. |
