We have exciting news and updates about our work at AFRUCA New AFRUCA Network Manchester Network on Serious Violence and Child Exploitation We are delighted to work with partner organisations across Manchester to establish the new Manchester Network on Serious Violence and Child Exploitation, with the support of Manchester City Council. Our Network aims to strengthen the voices of marginalised communities in Manchester affected by serious violence and child exploitation. We want to create opportunities for grass-root collaborative and partnership approaches to tackle serious violence and child exploitation in our communities. Membership of the Network is opened to grassroot and community based organisations across the City. Our next meeting will take place on Friday 26th July 2024. Lunch will be provided and we will contribute towards the travel costs of the grassroot organisations attending. Click to register as a Member AFRUCA Training Programme for Agencies AFRUCA Training Brochure for Agencies Working With Black and Ethnic Children and Families With over twenty three years’ experience of delivering specialist training courses aimed at enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of professionals working with Black and Ethnic children and families, we have gained a wealth of experience as one of the leading training providers in this area. We work with agencies to design relevant training courses delivered inhouse – face to face or virtually. Our new training brochure identifies the range of training courses we have available in 2024 – 2025 to help meet training needs. Click here to download Forthcoming Event – Scotland BASNET Open Day – Scotland Date: Friday 21st June 2024 Time: 11am – 3pm Location: CentrePoint Smith Avenue, Wishaw, ML2 0LD Join our network BASNET – The UK BME Anti-Slavery Network in Scotland for an enlightening and engaging open day event hosted by its member, The Economic Forum For Family Empowerment Scotland. This event will introduce potential members and partners to BASNET and our work in tackling race inequality in the UK Modern Slavery sector. The open day will be an opportunity to explore BASNET’s mission and impact, provide insights into the Network’s ongoing initiatives, membership benefits, and what it means to be a part of our community. Click here to download Report of Recent Event Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) For Black and Ethnic Families In The UK Child Protection System On 16 May 2024, AFRUCA held an online event to explore the inequalities for Black and Ethnic children within the social care sector and what changes needed to be made. Our panellist Pat Ndlalambi explored the experiences of immigrant children whose parents have no recourse to public funds and how this impacts on their innate rights to services. We also looked at the experiences of children in foster care linked to trauma. The question: “how do we prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of Black children in foster care” was discussed by panellist Tapiwa Julius. Alimatu Dimonekene explored how mental ill-health disproportionately affects Black communities with services unavailable or unable to meet their needs, leading to further disempowerment and marginalisation of communities. Professor Claudia Bernard examined how racism as a cause of trauma should be seen and treated as a child safeguarding issue. Using the example of Child Q, she explored how the term “Equality, Diversity and Inclusion” is “cozy” and does not truly explain the experiences of Black children where they are see as “the risk” and not “at risk”. Millie Kerr spoke about how the plethora of research on child protection does not address the intersectionality of issues experienced by Black children and young people, rather there is much unhelpful stereotyping of Black children by services. In relation to intersectionality, a key question about racism and homosexuality was posed by Reverend Jide Macaulay regarding the provision of support for Black and ethnic families to make their homes safer for their LGBT children. A number of recommendations were put forward and we are exploring how to include these as part of our service delivery and advocacy programmes at AFRUCA. We are thankful to our panellists and participants for a truly enlightening event. This event was held to mark AFRUCA’s 23rd Anniversary Service Updates AFRUCA Therapy Service For Children and Families in the Child Protection System or Returning Home from Foster Care The AFRUCA Psychotherapy service provides short-term, one to one, confidential and culturally appropriate therapy service for children (5-18 years) who have been involved in the local authority child protection system because of child/domestic abuse and/or who are being reunified with their birth parents after a period in foster care. Using a range of approaches, our psychotherapists provide support for children and their families to help them build emotional well-being, rebuild trust, emotional bond and attachment with their birth parents. Read more and download a referral form Join AFRUCA Talks: Our Free Saturday Online Child Protection Forum for Parents AFRUCA holds an online forum for parents every Satruday from 17:30 to 19:00. We explore a range of child protection and parenting issues. Participants have an opportunity to ask questions on issues of concern, in liaison with our staff and volunteer champions. Professionals can refer parents they are working with to join the forum. The next session is on 15 June 2024. Join The Mailing List Child Protection Awareness Sessions For Faith and Community Groups Are you a Black or ethnic faith group seeking to improve child protection awareness within your congregation? We deliver free basic child protection training programmes for members of faith and community groups across the country. Find Out More Understanding Child Protection In The UK: A Guide for Parents In Black and Ethnic Communities Our publication: “Understanding Child Protection In The UK: A Guide For Parents In Black and Ethnic Communities” is targeted at parents who are unfamiliar with Child Protection laws and processes in the UK and who inadvertently find themselves involved in the Child Protection system as a result. The “Guide” covers a range of subjects to support parents to strengthen their parenting knowledge and skills, identify risks of harm outside the home and ultimately improve protection and safety for their children. This is a highly recommended, useful resource for parents to improve their understanding of child protection and how to safeguard their children from harm.
