The NWG Network are delighted to be able to support Active Suffolk’s weeklong series of events to promote their #StandWithSuffolk Active Bystander awareness week.  

The safeguarding in sports team has been delivering bystander intervention training across England for sports coaches and volunteers for the last 18 months, the sessions have been very well received by the sports community and we have been delighted with the response to the training from our colleagues in Suffolk.  

The focus of our training is to prevent harm occurring in the first instance, empowering sports coaches to challenge misogynistic, sexist, racist language that children use, often under the guise of “banter”. We utilise the influence of the sports coach, and the power of their badge to drive change in young minds, to help them to understand the impact that their sometimes-offensive comments and behaviours can have on other children, both boys and girls.   

Our colleagues at Active Suffolk are now taking the whole concept of bystander interventions to a wider audience. They will have a week of online events to champion awareness of what it means to be an active bystander and the actions we can take to challenge discriminatory and harmful behaviour. 

We are delighted to support and participate in the weeklong suite of activities and fully endorse their ABC foundation of Awareness, Belief and Change which will help drive the campaign forward across Suffolk.  

The campaign demonstrates high levels of “growth mindset” as the ethos of the campaign is to develop happier, healthier communities and who would not want this to be a feature of the places where you all live?
