| Announcements Study on the Intersection Between Cognitive Impairment and Exploitation in England – Survey Deadline Extended Does your work entail a connection with people who identify as having cognitive impairment or difference? Researchers from the University of Nottingham and the University of Birmingham are conducting a two-year study to unravel the links between cognitive impairment and the risk of exploitation in England. They are inviting you to take part in an online survey to share your views on the effectiveness of current policies and practices in safeguarding people with cognitive impairment from exploitation. The survey is confidential and anonymous, taking only 15 to 25 minutes to complete. The deadline for responses is 16th October 2023. Take part here. Unseen Tours Unseen Tours supports vulnerable housed individuals to develop, curate, and lead guided walks to different neighbourhoods of London. They are offering free tours to organisations based in London that support refugees, homeless individuals and survivors of trafficking and slavery. They offer tours for groups of between 6-8 people and have the choice between London Bridge, Soho, Brick Lane and King’s Cross. Nominate your organisation here. Stronger Together Media Packs Join Stronger Together in marking Anti-Slavery Day on the 18th of October by showing how everyone can make one positive change: through collaboration and partnership. Free media packs are available to download on the Stronger Together website, and contain ideas for your organisation to get involved in raising awareness this Anti-Slavery Day, bespoke infographics to show the impact of modern slavery and forced labour, suggested social media posts and information on becoming a Modern Slavery Champion, for individuals and businesses. For further information, email [email protected] Inquiry Launch The APPG on Migration and the APPG on Poverty have launched a joint inquiry into the effects of UK Immigration, Asylum and Refugee Policy on Poverty. The inquiry aims to hear from experts and those with lived experience about how different immigration policies currently contribute to poverty amongst some communities in the UK and develop a set of shared recommendations for the Government. | Reports and Publications Slavery and Trafficking Risks and Prevention Orders (STROs and STPOs) Report The University of Nottingham Rights Lab has published a Background Review of the history and use of slavery and trafficking Risk and Prevention Orders. The Background Review offers an introduction to STROs and STPOs within the relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks, discusses their implementation and enforcement to date, and considers implications and lessons learned. Non-Punishment of Victims/Survivors of Human Trafficking in Practice: A Case Study of the United Kingdom The Council of Europe has published a legal study examining the principle of non-punishment of victims of trafficking, with a focus on the UK’s approach following the European Court of Human Rights judgment in the case of VCL and AN. The European Court of Human Rights found the UK in breach of Articles 4 and 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) for failing to identify and consider the protection needs of two Vietnamese children, despite credible suspicion they were victims of human trafficking when they were prosecuted and convicted of drug offences in the UK. Modern Slavery Policy and Evidence Centre Explainer: The Illegal Migration Act Modern Slavery Provisions The Modern Slavery Policy and Evidence Centre (MSPEC) have released an updated version of its Explainer which aims to answer common questions about the modern slavery provisions in the Illegal Migration Act. It is based on a rapid assessment of what is known from research, evidence and data about the rationale for the modern slavery provisions and their potential implications and a legal analysis of the human rights compatibility of the Act’s modern slavery provisions. Shiva Foundation Report: Understanding the Potential of Licensing Frameworks and Teams to Tackle Modern Slavery in the UK The Shiva Foundation has released a report which makes recommendations for strengthening statutory guidance and explores the opportunities for licensing authorities and practitioners to utilise tools at their disposal to enhance local anti-modern slavery responses. The report outlines: how national licensing guidance can be strengthened to tackle modern slavery across the UK, how councils can update local licensing policies to directly address modern slavery and how local licensing teams can practically confront modern slavery in their daily operations. | Events & Training Anti-Slavery Wales Conference Join the Anti-Slavery Wales 2023 conference to mark Anti-Slavery Day on 18th October. Hosted by Cardiff Business School in partnership with the Welsh Government, the police, and third-sector organisations, including members of the Anti-Slavery Wales Forum, the conference will provide an opportunity to hear from and network with frontline practitioners and experts. First Responder Conference The Human Trafficking Foundation invites all First Responders to join this webinar on 19th October to learn more about the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). Speakers, including the Single Competent Authority, The Salvation Army and Helen Bamber Foundation will take an in-depth look at what makes a good NRM referral and how the decisions are made, followed by a panel discussion on partnership working and alternative avenues of support. MiCLU, Shpresa and Garden Court Seminars Seminar – Unsafe: Reality vs rhetoric on the frontline of refugee law The Illegal Migration Act has brought new legal challenges relating to asylum, as the list of safe countries grows and the UK government seeks to enable the refoulement of asylum seekers. This has implications for the protection of human rights in the UK. This free legal seminar examines the country of origin evidence crucial to determining these cases and considers corresponding lines of strategy for successfully running cases. Local Government Association Online Event – Modern Slavery Risk Assessment and Due Diligence Guidelines for Adult Social Care In conjunction with the Local Government Association, the University of Nottingham’s Rights Lab is due to publish new guidance (9 October) to support local authority commissioners to establish modern slavery risk assessment and due diligence in their adult social care services. At this webinar, speakers will discuss some of the specific risks related to care work and present an overview of the practices that councils are adopting in response to the challenges emerging from an increase in overseas recruitment across the sector such as illegal pay rates, the repayment of recruitment fees and unsafe working conditions. Salvation Army Anti-Slavery Day Concert The Salvation Army’s Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery Department will be hosting a concert to mark Anti-Slavery Day 2023 at Regent Hall on 16th October from 6pm. The concert aims to celebrate with survivors and raise awareness of trafficking and modern slavery, and will feature performances from Survivors’ singing group, Black Voices (a female acappella quintet) and The Salvation Army Regent Hall Songsters. Nordic Model Now Conference – Breaking the Cycle: Exposing the Links Between Male Violence, Pornography and Prostitution This conference will explore how pornography and prostitution reinforce rape culture and the entitlement and dehumanisation that drives male sexual violence – and what can be done about it. Sex trafficking survivors and other experts will share their real-world experiences to highlight the issues and what we can do to tackle them. Hope for Justice’s best practice model of Independent Advocacy provides independent socio-legal advocacy to adult survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking. IMSAs ensure survivors can make informed choices about their entitlements and recovery and provide advocacy that is person-led, and trauma informed, to improve the safety, resilience and empowerment of each survivor. They are looking for a Senior Service Manager to oversee their Accommodation Services within the MSVCC and their Northeast Outreach Service. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the day-to-day management and oversight of these services including safe practices in service user care across the organisation, budget management, and line management of individual teams. They are recruiting an Independent Modern Slavery Advocate (IMSA) based in Birmingham, to assist agencies in identifying, safeguarding and supporting potential adult survivors. Black Country Women’s Aid Vacancy Black Country Women’s Aid supports survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence in the West Midlands. They are recruiting a full time Modern Slavery Outreach Advocate to provide frontline service to survivors and their children within the West Midlands area. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of case management including: risk assessment, needs assessment, journey planning, outcomes and case review when supporting clients through their recovery and reflection period. | HTF Resources Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) Consultancy The Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) was established to ensure the expertise of those with lived-experience is embedded in the work of the anti-trafficking sector and is made up of independent consultants who co-work with HTF. LEAP can offer the development and delivery of training (online, pre-recorded and in person), work with organisations to create or redesign training packages, provide expert advice on policy documents, research and guidance on supporting survivors of trafficking, join round tables on specific areas of modern slavery, sit on interview panels, undertake group focus groups and partake in 1 on 1 interviews. HTF’s Survivor Hub Survivor advocates and HTF have created an online Survivor Hub, a place for survivors to find opportunities for work and paid research participation, to find resources on education, housing support, the NRM, mental health support and includes directories of support providers and legal advisors across the country. HTF’s Emergency Support Fund The Human Trafficking Foundation’s Trafficking Emergency Support Fund is available to help victims of human trafficking and modern slavery with small one-off grants to meet their immediate needs when no other sources of funding are available. Updated London Modern Slavery SPOC Directory The Human Trafficking Foundation has been working with local authorities in the Greater London area to support the development of their response to modern slavery and human trafficking. As part of this, we produce an annual directory of Modern Slavery Single Points of Contact/Champions in statutory authorities across London including representatives within the NHS, police and local authorities.
