Cuckooing is wicked problem!

It is term that refers to the occupation of the whole or part of an individual’s property – often, but not exclusively to facilitate criminal activity.

Cuckooing often results in the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable adults and children. Take for example the County Lines business model which utilises people’s homes to prepare and store drugs, weapons and cash and also to accommodate individuals working for a county line. Perpetrators may use violence and coercion to occupy the property of individuals who are vulnerable, for example through substance misuse, mental health issues, domestic circumstances, loneliness or simply because they or a relative are in debt. Drug runners accommodated at cuckooed properties are often children who may have been reported ‘missing’.

Cuckooing is not limited to the facilitation of drug offences – it is often linked to other serious and organised crime, sexual offences and abuse.

A multi-agency response and awareness is required to effectively tackle the issue – leading to better reporting, safeguarding of victims and prosecutions of offenders

This ‘Tackling Cuckooing’ event is aimed at improving your knowledge and awareness of the issue. We want individuals from policing, NHS and other health services, Social Care, Housing associations, Local Authorities, The Fire Service, charities and other relevant professions to attend this event. Ideally we want individuals who can influence policy and practice in your workplace to support understanding of the problem and approaches to tackling it.

You will hear from key speakers in academia who have researched the problem, as well as from practitioners in policing and housing associations who have developed effective responses.

You will have an opportunity to network with colleagues across different organisations and you will have access to resources to support you in developing your approach.
