Working With Families Affected By Sibling Sexual Abuse – A Roadmap For Safeguarding – Face To Face Course

Sibling sexual abuse is the most common form of intrafamilial sexual harm in the UK, but recognising and responding to this issue brings many challenges for childcare professionals. Working with families where a child has sexually abused another sibling often involves supporting family members in crises and who are experiencing overwhelming shame. The complexity of sibling sexual abuse can often lead to confused and confusing responses by the team around the children, with professionals often under or overestimating the seriousness of the abuse. This training day has been developed for safeguarding professionals and those who work directly with children affected by sexual abuse and their families. It will provide a ‘road map’ for those supporting families that is collaborative and tackles concerns in proportionate, child centred and evidence-based ways, promoting safety and healing for everyone in the family when it is most needed.
By the end of the course attendees will have learned:
- key findings from up to date research into sibling sexual abuse in the UK and beyond, including prevalence, common forms of harm, typical causal factors and impact issues for survivors across the life course;
- the importance of survivor centred perspectives in working with families affected by sibling sexual abuse;
- how to differentiate normative sibling sexual interactions from behaviours that are problematic and behaviours that are abusive;
- key factors to consider when deciding whether siblings can continue to live together and when siblings need to be separated;
- how to construct a robust family safety plan;
- how to undertake a comprehensive assessment that understands sibling dynamics;
- about best practice in therapeutic work with children affected by sibling sexual abuse and their families;
- the principles of family reunification after sibling sexual abuse has occurred and key steps in helping families move on from harm; and
- about the after-care support needs of families affected by this issue.
