End-to-end encryption campaign

The Home Office launched an end-to-end encryption campaign, calling directly on Meta not to roll out end-to-end encryption on its platforms without robust safety measures that ensure children are protected from sexual abuse and exploitation in messaging channels. Read more about this here. There are two key campaign resources:

Campaign film

The film features Rhiannon-Faye McDonald (a victim and survivor advocate with lived experience and Head of Advocacy at the Marie Collins Foundation), Simon Bailey (former NPCC lead for child protection) and John Carr (Secretary of the UK’s Children’s Charities’ Coalition on Internet Safety). Please click here to download 16:9 and 4:5 versions of the film, both short and long edits.

Parent guide

This is an information guide for parents and carers developed in collaboration with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). This provides information about E2EE and advice for parents to consider if  their children are using social media platforms with end-to-end encryption. The link to the IWF website is now live and available here: www.iwf.org.uk/e2ee-for-parents

We would be grateful for your support to help amplify the campaign, including sharing the case study film and parent guide on your public channels and disseminating the campaign assets through your networks.

Home Secretary pays tribute to the Windrush Working Group

The Home Secretary has paid tribute to community leaders for their dedication to the Windrush generation, as the Windrush Working Group met for the final time.

Set up in June 2020, the group consists of stakeholders and community leaders with senior representatives from several government departments, who came together for a final time to look back and reflect on their work and achievements to date.

The group has been integral to ensuring that the department learns the lessons of the Windrush scandal, through working constructively alongside the Home Secretary to make sure improvements are made, and all those who were affected receive compensation through the Windrush Compensation Scheme.

Although the 3-year term expired at the end of September, the group discussed future planning to ensure their contribution to government policy is long lasting and embedded. Read more about this here.

In case you missed it…

Relaxed takeaway pints rules extended

The government has extended its relaxed licensing regulations that allow pubs, restaurants and bars to sell takeaway pints without needing to apply for a new license for further 18 months until March 2025.

The regulations mean that any site permitted to sell alcohol on their premises can sell for off-site consumption too, allowing the public to support their local pubs and business by having the choice to take away their drinks and providing a boost to local businesses.

The extension is part of the government’s commitment to supporting the hospitality sector in taking every opportunity to recover fully from the impact of the pandemic as we grow the economy.

Campaign Materials

The government is running several campaigns for vulnerable audiences. We would be grateful if you could share campaign materials and messaging on your channels, and with your networks.

·       ENOUGH. aims to challenge perpetrators and raise awareness of what we can all do to safely call out abuse. Please find attached a partner pack which includes more information on the campaign, and materials which you can share on your channels.

·       Stop Abuse Together aims to empower parents and carers to take steps to help keep the children in their life safe. All children have a right to be safe from sexual abuse, and we all have a role to play in keeping them safe. Let’s #StopAbuseTogether

·       Parentwise is designed to build parents and carers’ understanding of the range of harms their child could be exposed to. It includes a partner pack to help them spot the signs that something could be wrong and empower them to act if they are worried.
