The return of Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week has been confirmed for 3rd – 9th July 2023! The theme for 2023 is ‘Know Your Rights’, with a particular focus on the ASB Case Review – a powerful tool for victims of ASB that only 6% of people know about.  

Help raise awareness and tackle myths surrounding ASB and learn more about ASB Awareness week on the Resolve website here. Check out their ‘take action’ page for more ideas on how to get involved. 

White Ribbon 

White Ribbon UK, the leading charity working with men and boys to end violence against women, released its latest learning resource on Monday, May 15^th. ‘Building Gender Equality For Young People’ will help professionals speak to children and young people about gender norms and the potentially harmful realities of restrictive expectations of girls and boys. 

This comprehensive learning resource was developed by White Ribbon UK in consultation with expert practitioners and piloted in schools across the UK over a two-year period. 

‘Building Gender Equality’ is an open-access resource available for download on White Ribbon UK’s website. 
 
Ben Kinsella Trust 

Ben Kinsella Trust is running a campaign for Knife Crime Awareness Week, which is running this week and ends on the 21^st of May.  
 
“Knife Crime Awareness Week highlights the complexity of the problem, the devastation that it causes to families and communities and ultimately that knife crime is preventable. You can take action. By educating others, making a pledge, sharing your story or fundraising; you can be the change needed in our society.”

Government seeks advice on synthetic cathinone 

An independent review into the harms that ‘monkey dust’ and other synthetic cathinone pose has been commissioned as the government continues its work to combat drug addiction and violent crime. 
 
The Policing Minister has asked the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) to consider whether these substances, including ‘monkey dust’, should be re-classified to keep communities safe.

Fraud Strategy 

The government has launched a new Fraud Strategy to cut fraud, pursue fraudsters and protect the public. The new National Fraud Squad will overhaul how these crimes are investigated by taking a proactive, intelligence-led approach, backed by 400 new specialist investigators. It will work with local forces, international partners and the UK intelligence community to ensure that fraudsters who target millions of Brits each day are shut down.

Nitrous Oxide consultation 

The Prime Minister announced in the government’s Anti-Social Behaviour Action Plan, published on March 27^th, to ban nitrous oxide. Following this ban, we have launched a nitrous oxide consultation. This consultation seeks to understand the full range of legitimate uses of nitrous oxide and is aimed at any organisation or person who uses, or wishes to use in the future, nitrous oxide for legitimate purposes.

Martyn’s Law 
The UK’s resilience to terrorism is to be stepped up, as the government announces details for the Protect Duty, now to be known as ‘Martyn’s Law’ in tribute to Martyn Hett, who was killed alongside 21 others in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017. 
 
The new laws to keep people safe will scale up preparedness for, and protection from, terrorist attacks. Working closely with security partners, business and victims’ groups, including Figen Murray and the Martyn’s Law Campaign Team, and Survivors Against Terror, the new duty will require venues to take steps to improve public safety. 

Call for evidence on ‘sex-for-rent’ 
The ‘sex for rent’ call for evidence launched on April 21^st and is seeking the views of victims, police and charities to better understand the scale and nature of the abhorrent ‘sex for rent’ exchange in the UK.  

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman said:  

“It’s wholly unacceptable that vulnerable people, and particularly young women, are being exploited in ‘sex for rent’ arrangements. This is an abuse of power which puts people in desperate situations and has no place in our country.” 

If you would like to share your expertise on ‘sex for rent’ or are able to share the call for evidence with a survivor, this will help us to better understand the crime and better protect victims.

Police Uplift Programme 

The government has delivered on its 2019 manifesto commitment to recruit 20,000 additional police officers by March 2023. This brings the total number to nearly 150,000 officers. 

Police forces are now more representative of the diverse communities they serve, with over 53,000 female officers (35.5%) and over 12,000 (8.3%) from an ethnic minority background – both also at record highs. Whilst there is more progress to be made, thanks to the Police Uplift Programme there has been a 43% increase in the number of ethnic minority officers in England and Wales since the start of the recruitment drive.

The government is running several campaigns for vulnerable audiences. We would be grateful if you could share campaign materials and messaging on your channels, and with your networks.   

·       ENOUGH. aims to challenge perpetrators and raise awareness of what we can all do to safely call out abuse. Please find attached a partner pack which includes more information on the campaign, and materials which you can share on your channels.  

·       Stop Abuse Together aims to empower parents and carers to take steps to help keep the children in their life safe. All children have a right to be safe from sexual abuse, and we all have a role to play in keeping them safe. Let’s #StopAbuseTogether  

·       Parentwise is designed to build parents and carers’ understanding of the range of harms their child could be exposed to. It includes a partner pack to help them spot the signs that something could be wrong and empower them to act if they are worried.
