·   10,613 potential victims of modern slavery were referred to the NRM in 2020, and 2,178 reports were received by the Home Office via the DtN. These figures are similar to 2019. The plateau in referrals, following sustained increases in previous years, is primarily thought to be a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions.

·   Just under half of the referrals (48%) were for adult potential victims, whilst 47% were for child potential victims.

·   The most common type of exploitation for adults was labour exploitation and for children was criminal exploitation. Of the child criminal exploitation referrals, 40% were flagged as county lines referrals.

·   Potential victims from the UK, Albania and Vietnam were the three most common nationalities to be referred to the NRM in 2020 overall, although Sudanese nationals also saw a substantial increase in referrals in quarter 4.

·   Just over a quarter (26%) of the potential victims claimed the exploitation took place overseas only, with 63% claiming it took place in the UK.
