The Public Protection Arrangements for Northern Ireland have changed from 1 April 2015. The Child Abuse Investigation Units (CAIUs) are now co-terminous with the Health and Social Care Trust boundaries. To make contact with the PSNI about suspected child abuse contact the Central Referral Unit (CRU) based in Belfast and they will take the details. The case will then be allocated to the Child Abuse Investigation Unit in whose area the alleged offence occurred. When you are referring to the CRU ensure that you request that the investigating officer contact you directly. This will then prompt the CRU staff member to include your request for contact in the onward referral to the appropriate Child Abuse Investigation Unit.

Streetwork, a local charity in Edinburgh, has long experience in helping people who find themselves living on, or at risk from the streets. Our staff are our biggest asset delivering flexible services and meeting the highest standards. Barnardos Child and Family Spport Services works with children and young people who have experienced abuse. We provide a range of interventions for children and young people who have experienced or are at risk of sexual exploitation. We provide 1:1 support; therapeutic work where appropriate; help young people develop increased confidence and resilience, enable them to gain better understanding of the factors which can lead to sexual exploitation, help them to develop safety strategies and help build stronger support and protective networks around the child/young person. Our group programme – FACE (Fighting Against Child Exploitation) is an award winning programme which supports and enables young people to support others who have experienced or are at risk of sexual exploitation; raise awareness of sexual exploitation and the factors which can increase the risks of sexual exploitation; develop and produce resource for professionals and young people – such as the Nae Danger pack and the FaceUp2It website (http://www.faceup2it.org/); and contribute to training for professionals and community groups.

The project is part of Drugs Actions range of service’s based in Aberdeen. As a new and unique service to the north-east we aim to prevent the sexual exploitation of young people and support those who have or who are currently experiencing sexual exploitation, while at the same time raising awareness amongst professionals and communities alike through offering; One to one support Awareness-raising group work sessions for under 25s and their workers We aim to; Improve young peoples understanding of sexual exploitation while highlighting the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships, allowing them to recognise when something is not right. Equip young people with the skills and knowledge to help keep them safe. Make young people aware of their own rights and what other services they can access for support and advice. By giving young people these skills we are helping them to make informed life decisions and support them to move away from exploitative situations.
