Brighter Futures originally known as Potteries Housing Association was set up in 1974 to provide homeless people with somewhere to sleep. By 2016 the organisation was becoming much more than a housing association and is now known as Brighter Futures.

Barnardo’s Birmingham Space Project
Birmingham Space is a service for children and young people who are abused or vulnerable to abuse through sexual exploitation. Birmingham Space works directly with abused children and young people to develop strategies that will enable them to move towards a safer and more settled lifestyle. Work is also undertaken with children and young people who are vulnerable, to reduce the risk of abuse through sexual exploitation. Birmingham Space provides presentations and training to adults working with children, to increase awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding child sexual exploitation, in order that vulnerable or abused children can be identified and appropriate interventions can be supported. Birmingham Space can provide preventative programmes in schools and youth settings to explore risk and vulnerability, define the difference between abusive and loving relationships, and raise awareness of how children can be targeted and exploited by adults.

Street Teams
Street Teams work with children and young people at risk of, and affected by, sexual exploitation, grooming and trafficking. We work with boys as well as girls, some as young as 8 years old and from all backgrounds. We aim to break the cycle of abuse, by helping the young person to fully understand their situation and realise that they are able to make choices. We run various programmes, dependent on the young person’s level of vulnerability and emotional damage.

Time 2 Project
We work with young people aged 11-18 who are at medium to high risk of CSE. We offer 1:1 person centred support. Our aim is to inform, support and empower young people to make informed decisions and to reduce the risk of CSE.

Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service
The Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service is a run by a multi-agency team and consists of staff from Sheffield Futures, South Yorkshire Police, NHS and Sheffield City Council.
The service is based on five principles:
- Prevention
- Protection
- Pursuit
- Prosecution
- Participation
The service supports young people who are at risk of, or have been, sexually exploited. Every time a young person is referred to the service, a risk assessment is completed to identify the level of risk and the needs of that individual. Support workers focus on raising young people’s awareness of risky situations, whilst bolstering their self-esteem to support them to make informed choices about their lives. Whilst supporting young people at risk is the priority, their family can also be affected.
Our service has dedicated face-to-face support staff for families affected by CSE.
We also run the South Yorkshire Alexi Project.

Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service
Sheffield Sexual Exploitation Service is a co-located, multi-agency service responsible for tackling child sexual exploitation in Sheffield. The service is currently based at Star House – Sheffield Futures’ central office. The service comprises of Sheffield Futures youth workers and administrative support staff, South Yorkshire Police officers and missing person’s officers, Sheffield City Council social work staff and a Barnardos support worker. The service works to address sexual exploitation on four key principals; prevention, protection, pursuit and prosecution. The service works with partner agencies to prevent sexual exploitation by raising awareness of issues with professionals, businesses, communities and young people. Youth workers and social care staff from the service are responsible for protecting young people who are identified as being, or at risk of being, sexually exploited.
